The Naming of Tokerau

Decades ago in Doubtless Bay, New Zealand there lived a tribe of 100. In that tribe there was a chief named Poiharuru, who was determined to trek over a beach and to a huge Pa.

But there was a diverse tribe that lived on the beach and they wouldn’t let them pass. So Poiharuru prayed to the great taniwha that lived in doubtless bay and was in a trance for a few moments while he was talking to the taniwha.

When he woke up he told his tribe what the taniwha had told him. Then suddenly a colossal wave washed over them, and they all 100 of them turned into worms! Then they dug under the sand and crawled under the beach and to the Pa completely unnoticed!

Then another hefty wave crashed over them and they turned back into people. Tokerau was the beach that they crawled over and that was how it got its name, Toke means worm and Rau means 100!!!!
