The Naming of Tokerau

Decades ago in Doubtless Bay, New Zealand there lived a tribe of 100. In that tribe there was a chief named Poiharuru, who was determined to trek over a beach and to a huge Pa.

But there was a diverse tribe that lived on the beach and they wouldn’t let them pass. So Poiharuru prayed to the great taniwha that lived in doubtless bay and was in a trance for a few moments while he was talking to the taniwha.

When he woke up he told his tribe what the taniwha had told him. Then suddenly a colossal wave washed over them, and they all 100 of them turned into worms! Then they dug under the sand and crawled under the beach and to the Pa completely unnoticed!

Then another hefty wave crashed over them and they turned back into people. Tokerau was the beach that they crawled over and that was how it got its name, Toke means worm and Rau means 100!!!!

Moana Summarised Legend

I am posting this because my teacher said I had to.
Image result for moanaThe female lead of this story is Moana, a future tribal leader from the island of Motonui. Moana set off on a huge adventure to find Maui and restore the heart of Te Fiti which Maui stole. It took awhile but she finally convinces Maui to come with her. They travel through the rough sea, fight evil Coconuts and steal jewels from a Sea Snail. All leading up to the final fight versing the evil Te Ka, where Maui breaks his hook and ditches Moana. Moana is on own and decides she can face Te Ka without Maui. She was almost defeated when Maui comes to the rescue and they restore the heart of Te Fiti. Maui gets a new hook as a reward and Moana becomes the chief. The End.

How Mangonui got its name

Mangonui means Great or Big Shark. It was named what it is because the founder of Mangonui (Riu Karamea) was lost at sea and a big / great shark came and guided them to Mangonui.

Rata and the Totara Tree

Hundreds of years ago, in a deep, dark forest in New Zealand there lived a small maori tribe. In the tribe was a master carver named Rata.

One day the chief asked Rata to build a huge canoe to hold his whole tribe so they could voyage the reckless seas. So the next day Rata and some other men from the tribe went out to find a tall totara tree they could use it to build the canoe. After searching for a while they finally find a huge, tall totara tree. They spend the rest of the day chopping it down, by the time it was on the ground it was time to go home. The next day when they came back the tree was standing perfectly just like it was when they found it. So they chopped it down again and the same thing happened the next morning. Rata couldn’t figure out what was wrong, till suddenly it hit him…..

He had forgotten to say thanks to Tane for this glorious tree. This time he remembered and when they returned in the morning there was a huge canoe the Tane’s spirts had made for them. And they all lived Happily ever after.
