Maui and the GIANT Fish

Maui had always wanted to go fishing with his older brothers. But every time he asked them if he could
come they would always come up with an excuses. Such as saying that there was not enough room for
him because of the many fish they caught, or that he was so skinny they might mistake him for bait. This
made Maui very angry, so one day he had a plan to stowaway on their canoe. He weaved himself a
fishing line and recited his karakia to make his line vigorous.

The next day Maui hid in the hulk of his brothers canoe. While he hid in the canoe, his brother were
bickering over who wasn’t helping carry the canoe (Because they realised it was heavier than normal).
When Maui finally heard the anchor fall, he knew it was time for him to reveal himself. His brothers were
startled and irritated when they saw him and said “That explains why we weren’t catching any fish, you’re bad luck!”. “Put your fishing line in the sea and I will recite a karakia that will make you catch lots of fish” Maui exclaimed. The brothers put their lines in the sea and Maui chanted his karakia, all of a sudden the brothers started catching extreme amounts of fish. As soon as their waka was full of fish the brothers decided it was time to go home. “Wait, now it is my turn to fish” Maui said suddenly. The brother cracked up with laughter and started making fun of Maui and his rod, saying the most his petty rod could catch was a strip of seaweed. Maui politely asked them if he could have some bait, obviously they said no.

So Maui hit himself in the nose and blood cascaded out from his nose and onto his hook. He plopped his
hook into Tangaroa and recited his karakia once again. Then suddenly the line became taught and the
brothers stumbled back in fear. The boat started going crazy on the surface of Tangaroa, then suddenly
a giant fish rose to the surface. Maui told his brother to wait there while he went and got the people of their village. When Maui and the village came back, the brothers were greedily chomping at the fish and
the people saw how greedy the brothers really were.

That is how we came to live on this beautiful uneven fish, we call the north island. Maui’s canoe is the
south island.
